rudy mettia: on yoga & his life story

We all have a life story, but some people have a particularly interesting and unique life story. Santa Monica-based yoga teacher Rudy Mettia is one of these people, and his journey to yoga has taken a different route than many others. The former marine had a host of “unusual careers,” including stunt man, bodyguard and bouncer, before discovering yoga, becoming a teacher, and then becoming a teacher of yoga teachers.

“Our life story is a well-spring that propels us,” he explains in this video interview. “Motivation can come from inspiration or desperation, and in my story, desperation propelled me forward.”

There are still remnants of his former selves in his teaching and persona, and his playfully rough exterior hints at his irreverent and down-to-earth approach to teaching yoga. Mettia’s seamless fusion of alignment and power flow has garnered him a reputation as the “mad scientist” of yoga, although he prefers Bruce Lee’s “style of no style.”

IAYB had an enjoyable time with Mettia, learning about his yoga trajectory and Udaya (IAYB sponsor), an online yoga platform where he is a co-founder and senior teacher. Watch the video below for our full interview!
