MISTY 2012: leslie kaminoff on yoga therapy standards & regulation

One of the burgeoning conversations in the therapeutic yoga community is how to navigate the relationship between the medical establishment and those who identify as yoga therapists.

Leslie Kaminoff, respected yoga educator and author of Yoga Anatomy, has been an outspoken critic of this relationship. He’s also critical of the growing field of yoga therapy. So, of course, I had to start off our video interview by asking why he’s participating in MISTY, the Montreal International Symposium on Therapeutic Yoga.

Ultimately, Kaminoff is an advocate for “free market yoga” and his belief is that insurance companies and regulation threaten the teacher-student relationship. He also has a vast knowledge of human anatomy; we touch on his approach to the therapeutic application of yoga at the end of our conversation.
