Every now and then, a photo of Marilyn Monroe in Halasana (Plow Pose) or Marilyn Monroe doing Shalamba Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) in a cute red sweater circulates on Facebook and everyone is all, Whoa Marilyn Monroe did yoga before yoga was cool!
But other than these captivating pics, we don’t really know a lot about her practice. Scholar Eric Shaw has tried to remedy that, compiling all 21 of the known Monroe yoga images in one blog post, along with a text orienting her practice in American yoga history. Shaw positions the photos (circa 1948) with the arrival of Indra Devi in California, the publication of BKS Iyengar’s Light on Yoga, and Bikram Choudhury’s landing on American shores.
