GLBL YOGA admits defeat, “postpones” event until 2013

You mean “Largest crowd funded FLOP in history,” right? (screenshot via

Yesterday, The Babarazzi asked “Will GLBL YOGA happen whether you want it to or not?” Well, it appears the much-criticized August 16 event, which held the lofty goal of bringing 15,000 people to practice yoga in Central Park and being the largest crowd funded event ever, won’t happen.

Just four days before the end of their Indigogo campaign (which has raised a dismal 2% of the $675,000 goal), the promoters posted the following announcement on their website:

Unfortunately, we have decided to postpone the GLBL YOGA event scheduled for August 16, 2012 in New York.

The mission and the overall concept of GLBL YOGA were embraced with great excitement and enthusiasm. However, our experiment with crowd-funding the event did not meet our ambitious expectations. As a result, we’re going to take some time to rethink our strategy and model, and we will return with renewed purpose in the summer of 2013.

We deeply believe that GLBL YOGA can be a tremendous catalyst, using the power of yoga to foster unity and community around the world. We’re grateful for your support, and we look forward to seeing you next summer.

In the meantime, we will be providing a full refund to all donors. Thank you and namaste.

The people have spoken, and it seems that they don’t want to pay for large scale celebrity-studded “free” yoga with corporate interests. Shocking!

We’ll have to wait until next year to see what “cool” concept the GLBL YOGA organizers will co-opt in the name of brand promotion disguised as bringing yoga to the masses.

  1. $675k!!! It is hard enough for the community to understand covering costs for a local, grassroots festival. There needs to be a better understanding and education of the business, and by this I simply mean the real costs, of running any festival or event.

  2. i have almost completed my proposal to crowdfund a yogic spiritual takeover of Maui for 1 month. to include: lamborghinis for transportation, private jets, accommodations at the Ritz Carlton (which, in all honesty is my fave Maui hotel), a team of vegan chefs, and nightly entertainment by the boys from Magic Mike. naturally, you will be there, along with the rest of my favorite friends.

i expect it will hit kickstarter and smash records for meeting funding goals with neck-breaking rapidity. the little people just adore contributing to non-sensical excess.

help me promote the campaign when it goes live? xo
