Trust in yoga as I do, and practice regularly.
~ BKS Iyengar, Sparks of Divinity, 16.102
After 94 years on Earth and decades of practice, BKS Iyengar has more than a few insights into yoga. To celebrate his recent 94th birthday (December 14), I’m teaming up with Rodmell Press to give away three copies of Sparks of Divinity: The Teachings of BKS Iyengar from 1959 to 1975.
BKS Iyengar is one of the forefathers of modern yoga and the founder of the Iyengar system of yoga. He started teaching yoga in 1937 at the age of 19, after studying with Krishnamacharya for several years and overcoming childhood illnesses such as malaria, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, and general malnutrition. He’s the author of the seminal asana text, Light on Yoga, and in 2004 was named one of TIME Magazines 100 most influential people in the world. He lives and teaches in Pune, India.
In Sparks of Divinity, longtime Iyengar student Noëlle Perez-Christiaens collects the words of BKS Iyengar, gathered and compiled from class notes and correspondence. Arranged in chronological order, the pithy teachings read like sutras and give an intimate portrait of Iyengar’s evolution as a teacher.
